Lake Wylie, the body of water, is the oldest lake along the Catawba River, created in 1904 when a dam was built near Fort Mill. In 1924, the dam was reconstructed and the lake was expanded. Lake Wylie is also the name of the unincorporated, census-designated community that has developed on a peninsula along the shore of the lake, which was named for Dr. W. Gil Wylie in 1960. It is in York County, South Carolina.
