Lyman is located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Today, the town serves as a suburb of nearby Greer, but the town got its start in the 1870s as a farming community known as Groce's Stop, named for the general store there. In the 1920s, Pacific Mills bought more than seven hundred acres from the Groce family and built a textile mill there, along with 375 homes for mill workers. The town's name was changed to Lyman, who was a former president of Pacific Mills.
