Located in northeastern South Carolina, Marion serves as the seat of Marion County. English settlers migrating inland from the South Carolina coast began moving into the area in the 1730s, and by 1754 a permanent settlement was established by John Godbold and others. By the late 1700s, the community was known as Gilesborough. In 1799, the village was incorporated as a city, and its name was changed to Marion in 1847, in honor of General Francis Marion, also known as Swamp Fox.
