Mayesville is a small town in Sumter County, South Carolina, named for Mathew Petterson Mayes, who built a family home there in 1821. The town is the birthplace of Mary McLeod-Bethune, a civil rights leader and founder of what became Bethune-Cookman College. She also acted as an unofficial advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
