Mount Croghan is one of the three oldest towns in Chesterfield County. The name of the hill around which the town was built is the only name by which the settlement and town have been known dates back to 1780 and the Battle of Camden. The hill got its name from Major Croan, a French officer involved in the Revolutionary War, who camped there while traveling to Virginia after the battle. By 1809, Mount Croghan was a voting precinct and had a post office.
