Ninety Six is now a small town in Greenwood County, South Carolina. In the country's earliest days, colonists established a fortified settlement there, which served as a political and legal center for the northwestern corner of the state. The name Ninety Six was in use as far back as 1730, and is thought to refer to the distance in miles from the fort to the Cherokee Nation's capital of Koewee.
