The town of North, located on the western edge of Orangeburg County, South Carolina, was established in what was then a dense forest of pine, oak and hickory. The South Bound Railroad Company ran north to Columbia and as far south as Savannah, Georgia. The railroad was offered the rights to extend its tracks through what was to become the new town by a trio of landowners, the eldest of which was John F. North, whom the new town was named for.
