Settled in the mid-1800s as a railroad stop at the highest point between Charleston and Savannah, the South Carolina community was originally known as Gopher Hill. The town was incorporated in 1900, and its name was changed to Ridgeland. The town was part of Beaufort and Hampton counties until Jasper County was formed in 1912, at which time it was named the seat of the new county.
