Seneca is located in Oconee County, which forms the northwestern tip of South Carolina, bordering both Georgia and North Carolina. Originally founded as Seneca City in 1873, the city gained its name from the nearby Cherokee town of Isunigu, which was known to the English as Seneca Town. Former Senator and Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards was born in Seneca, and the city is the current home of Senator Lindsey Graham.
