Simpsonville was founded as a stagecoach stop in the 1820s, and did a brisk business until the American Civil War, when business and traffic all but came to a halt. Early in the Reconstruction period, Simpsonville's black population founded the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, the first church organized within the city limits, and which remains active today.
