Summerton is a small town in southwestern Clarendon County, South Carolina. Anne Custis Burgess, the composer of the state song, Carolina, grew up there in the 1870s. Summerton is also the source of the first of four cases combined into Brown versus Board of Education, which overturned racial segregation in U.S. public schools in 1954.
