Summerville, South Carolina is in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties. Settled after the American Revolutionary War, it was called Pineland Village. It was soon populated with plantation owners from Charleston who needed a place to go when the insects and swamp fever got too much to bear. It became the town of Summerville in 1847, the same year that the town passed a law making chopping down large trees illegal. The motto of the city is translated from Latin as "The Pine is Sacred."
