Ulmer is located in northeastern Allendale County. Although the town received its charter in 1891, property records indicate that the area was settled prior to the Revolutionary War. At the time that the settlement became a town, Ephriam Ulmer agreed to give up property he owned adjacent to the train depot in exchange for having the new town named after him.
