The seat of Union County, Union is located in northwestern South Carolina. The city and the county were named for the old Union Church that stood near the Monarch Mill. Initially, the town was known as Unionville, later shortened to Union. The area was settled in the mid-1700s, and was untouched by the American Civil War because the Broad River flooded, turning Sherman's troops away from the town.
