Located in southern South Carolina, Walterboro is the largest city in Colleton County, and the county seat. Originally spelled Walterborough, the community was founded in 1783 as a summer retreat for local planters, and was located on a hilly area known as Hickory Valley, for its hickory trees. Two of its early settlers were Paul and Jacob Walter, who owned plantations in nearby Jacksonboro, but moved to the area for their health, founding the town that was named after them.
