Ware Shoals is located along the banks of the Saluda River in the northern tip of Greenwood County, South Carolina. In the 1800s, people would come to the place where the town was later to be built in order to sit on the large rocks along the river, known as shoals, to picnic, fish or relax. In time, a man named Ware built a gristmill there, so it became known as Ware's Shoals, later shortened to Ware Shoals.
