Yemassee, South Carolina is named for the Yemassee Indians, a powerful tribe of indigenous people who were in the area before the English settlers arrived. While the tribe and settlers lived together peacefully for a time, that ended in 1715 when the Yemassee and other tribes rose up against unfair treatment from the British. The town is located in the South Carolina counties of Beaufort and Hampton, and is considered to be in the geographical center of the Lowcountry region.
