Settled in 1881, the community was founded, and in 1882 the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad constructed a branch line through the Big Sioux Valley, with its turntable at Castlewood. The engineer of the first train passing through was named Castle, and the conductor's name was Wood, which is the origins of the name for the town. Castlewood is in Hamlin County, South Dakota.
