The City of Flandreau has been in different locations and has had different names and spellings since its founding in 1857. The original settlement was abandoned within a year due to activities of the Yankton Sioux, then resettled in 1869 by families of Christianized Sioux from the Santee Reservation. White settlement resumed in 1872, and Flandreau was made the county seat the following year.
