The city was formed at the junction of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and Saint Paul Railroads in 1883, and was named by the railroad superintendent, C.H. Prior, after his home town of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Lake Prior, in the center of town, is named for Mr. Prior. Woonsocket is the seat of Sanborn County, South Dakota.
