Kingston, Tennessee, the county seat of Roane County. The city was established in 1799 and named in honor of an officer from nearby Fort Southwest Point, Major Robert King. It was Tennessee's state capital for one day, on September 21, 1807, just long enough to fulfill a promise to the Cherokee who had been promised that if they ceded the land, Kingston would be the capital of Tennessee. Once they had the one assembly meeting there, the capital was moved back to Knoxville.
