The city of Bastrop is the county seat of Bastrop County, Texas, and is situated southeast of Austin. It was the site of a fort and was populated by Spanish soldiers in 1804 and for years thereafter. It was named in honor of an embezzler from the Netherlands who was using an alias and fake title of Baron de Bastrop, who was Stephen Austin's land commissioner.
