The Texas city of Edinburg was incorporated in 1919. The community was first called Chapin, in honor of one of the developers, Dennis Chapin. Chapin became the county seat in the middle of the night when county records were removed covertly from the former seat, Hidalgo, and whisked away to the new county seat. When Dennis Chapin became involved in a murder, in 1911 the name was changed to Edinburg in honor of the hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland of one of the prominent businessmen.
