Galveston, Texas, is the county seat of Galveston County. Named in honor of Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, Count of Gálvez, who led the Spanish armies against England in the American Revolutionary War, the island city was the main port for the Texas Navy during the Texas Revolution, and served at the capital of the Republic of Texas after that war. Galveston is possibly best known for the hurricane in 1900 which flattened the city while the citizens thought they were safe from it.
