Located in the northwestern part of the state, in a region known as the Llano Estacado, Lubbock is the seat of Lubbock County, and home to Texas Tech University. The city was founded in 1876, and named after Thomas Saltus Lubbock, a Confederate colonel and member of the Terry's Texas Rangers.
