Norfolk, Virginia, is an independent city on the south shores of the Chesapeake Bay. It is the proud home of the Norfolk Naval Base, the largest base of its kind in the world. One of the original colonies, it has a colonial history going back to 1619. Among its famous former residents are Joseph Jenkins Roberts who was born and raised there and became the first President of Liberia.
