Springfield, Virginia, in Fairfax County, was founded when the Orange and Alexandria Railroad put a station in the area in 1847. Named in honor of the estate of Henry Daingerfield, and it was known as Springfield, as was the post office, established in 1866. The post office closed in 1868, and Richard Moore founded a new one and changed the name to Moor. It was renamed Garfield in 1881, to honor President Garfield who had been assassinated that year. In 1910, it returned to the name Springfield.
