The state of Washington is home to Kelso, the county seat of Cowitz County. Founded in 1847 by Scottish surveyor Peter Crawford, the town is named in honor of his home town of Kelso, Scotland. Known in its early days as "Little Chicago" due to the availability of taverns and brothels, Kelso was the weekend destination of trainloads of loggers who would come to the town looking for liquor, women, card games, and fights.
