The capital of the state of Washington is the city of Olympia, which is also the county seat of Thurston County. The first European to visit the area was Peter Puget, who mapped the area in 1792. It was named Olympia in honor of its view of the Olympic Mountains, in 1853 and was incorporated in 1859.
