The city of Tacoma, Washington, is Pierce County's county seat. It is nicknamed the City of Destiny and is named after Mt. Rainier, which was once called Mt. Tacoma. It began life in 1852 when Nicholas Delin opened a sawmill there, and began to thrive when the railroad came through.
