In 1834, the British Parliament passed the South Australia Act 1834, which enabled the province of South Australia to be established as the first freely-settled, and planned British province for free immigrants rather than convicts, and promising civil liberties and religious tolerance. It is bordered by the states of Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, as well as the Great Australian Bight and the Southern Ocean.
