Adelaide is located north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains. Named in honour of Queen Adelaide, the consort of King William IV, Adelaide was founded in 1836 and is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of South Australia. Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city according to his plan, now known as Light's Vision. The city of Adelaide on a grid system - a design which the city still benefits from today.
