Also called cinerary urns or burial urns, funerary urns are used to collect the ashes of a deceased person after cremation has taken place. Decorative pottery urns were used for this purpose in China at least as far back as 7000 BC, where they were used mostly for children, but sometimes for adults as well. Cremation urns were also used in Anglo Saxon England and by the Romans. In current times, cremation urns of varying design, quality, and cost are offered by the funeral industries. Biodegradable urns are also available, sometimes made from coconut shell, peat, cellulose, or other natural products designed to decompose when buried. Cremation urns are also used to retain the ashes of a loved one. Only those products offered for sale online, and for wide distribution, should be represented in this category.
