Also known as pugilism and prizefighting, the sport of boxing goes back at least to ancient Egypt, around the year 3000 B.C. At that time, the boxers fought naked, and fights were part of the King’s festivities. Boxing was accepted as an Olympic sport in 688 B.C. at the 23rd Olympiad in Olympia, and it continues to be a recognized Olympic sport to this day. Boxing is a combat sport, in which two people throw punches at one another with gloved hands, supervised by a referee, during a series of one- to three-minute rounds. A winner is declared when an opponent is disqualified for breaking a rule, resigns from the fight by throwing in a towel, is deemed unable to continue by the referee, or is pronounced the winner at the end of the contest, based on points scored.
