Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, by population, and it has the largest economy.

Approximately 12,000 companies provide more than 410,000 jobs in Glasgow, and the city's economic growth rate is second only to London in the United Kingdom.

However, the once-dominant export-oriented manufacturing industries, such as shipbuilding and heavy engineering, are being gradually replaced by more diversified forms of economic activity, although several major manufacturing firms remain, such as Aggreko, BAE Systems, British Polar Engines, Edrington, Firebrand Games, Weir Group, and Whyte & Mackay.

At one time, Glasgow was one of the most important manufacturing cities in the UK, which formed a large part of its economy. Based on the River Clyde, shipbuilding was particularly prominent. The Cutty Sark and the HMS Hood were constructed in Glasgow, as were several transatlantic luxury liners, including Aquitania, RMS Queen Mary, RMS Queen Elizabeth, and RMS Queen Elizabeth II.

While the industry is not as large today as it once was, shipbuilding in Glasgow continues in the form of BAE Systems Maritime-Naval Ships, and Ferguson Marine.

While manufacturing in Glasgow has declined, its financial and business service sectors have grown, particularly around the International Financial Services District on the Broomielaw, replacing a stretch of riverside warehouses that one occupied the area. Also significant are Glasgow communications companies, biosciences, and creative industries.

Beginning in the 1970s, several call centres have opened in Scotland, about one-third of them in Glasgow.

Existing manufacturing industries include shipbuilding, engineering, construction, brewing and distilling, printing and publishing, chemicals, and textiles, along with some newer industries, such as optoelectronics, software development, and biotechnology. A portion of the Silicon Glen high-tech sector in Scotland is in Glasgow. RHA Technologies is headquartered in the city.
