Derby, a city which is situated in Derbyshire on the banks of the River Derwent, became a city in June of 1977. That is not to say, however, that it was unpopulated until then. It was first settled by the Romans and later captured by the Anglo-Saxons, and then the Vikings.

Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company, one of the two oldest manufacturers of English porcelain, since 1750. The company is known for its bone china. There is disagreement as to whether Royal Worcester or Royal Crown Derby was established first.

During the Industrial Revolution, Derby was the home of the first water-powered silk mill in Britain which helped to make Derby and the surrounding area to be famous for its hosiery.

In 1908, Rolls-Royce Limited opened a factory in Derby, and during World War I, the company began manufacturing aircraft engines. In 1916, German Zeppelin air bombers raided Derby, killing five people. Derby found itself to be on-track to becoming a major rail manufacturing center in the early 1920s when the Railways Act of 1921 which mandated that 120 small rail companies merge. The resulting railway company, the London & North West Railway, included Derby on their important routes.

In 1964, the British Rail Research Division, which was formed under the direct control of the British Railways Board, with the mission of improving railway efficiency and reliability while improving revenue for the industry. The research division moved into Derby’s Railway Technical Center and was soon recognised as an excellent organization, and in short time, they provided railways around the globe with consultancy.

Rolls-Royce Holdings remains one of the top two largest employers, along with Toyota. Other important companies there include First Source, which handles a large portion of Sky’s phone support; Triton Equity, which acquitted Alstom’s plant which makes heat exchangers and boilers; and Bombardier Transportation, a railroad systems engineering company.

As of late June 2022, there are 794,600 people living in Derby, which is up by 24,900 since the 2011 census, and all sectors of the city are expanding.
