There is a long history of quality education in Scotland, and Paisley is no exception.

The Scottish education system differs somewhat from that followed in Britain, Ireland, and other parts of the United Kingdom. The national curriculum from nursery school through the third year of secondary school is the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. A senior phase of learning follows this during the final three years of secondary school.

Local authorities own and operate most of the schools, and both primary and secondary school attendance is mandatory. A government body responsible for maintaining the standard of education regulates all schools, which are required to follow a set curriculum.

Children begin school between the ages of 4.5 and 5.5, although many younger children attend nursery schools. Most students begin secondary school at the age of 12, where they will study as many as eight subjects.

Before enrollment in a university, students must study for intermediate and higher grade exams.

The main campus of the University of the West of Scotland is in Paisley. The modern university was created through the 2007 merger of the University of Paisley and Bell College. Before that, it had merged with Craigie College of Education in 1993. The University of Paisley had been granted university status in 1992; previously, it was the Paisley College of Technology. The University of the West of Scotland has campuses in Paisley, Hamilton, Dumfries, and Ayr, as well as one in London, England.

West College Scotland also has a campus in Paisley, which had previously been known as Reid Kerr College.

Paisley is home to four comprehensive state secondary schools: Paisley Grammar School, Castlehead High School, St. Andrew's Academy Paisley, and Glennifer High School. All of its currently operating secondary schools are non-denominational, except for St. Andrew's, which is a Roman Catholic school.

Topics related to childcare centres, nursery schools, or other preschool facilities in Paisley, as well as its primary, secondary, or higher education institutions are appropriate for this portion of our web guide, as are local tutoring programmes or other topics related to education and learning within the town.
