Named for Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, the city of Fayette, in Howard County, Missouri, was founded in 1823, and named the county seat that same year. During the Civil War, Union forces occupied Fayette several times. On September 20, 1864, Confederate troops attempted to take Fayette from the Union, with resulting battled on the town square, and a period of economic disarray continued until 1873, when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad came through. Fayette is southwest of Burton, northwest of Woodlandville, north of Franklin, northeast of Boonesboro, and southeast of Glasgow.
