The city of Monett, Missouri is in Monett Township in Barry County, as well as Pierce Township in Lawrence County. The city was founded in 1887, and named for an agent of the New York Central Railroad, although its history dates back at least to 1870, when the South Pacific Railroad, which later became the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway (Frisco), extended its tracks through the area that was to become Monett. In 1875, a Waldensian congregation was formed there and, in 1880, when a new branch of the railroad left the main line at this location, a community that was then called Plymouth or Plymouth Junction, was formed. When a post office was established, it was known as Gonten, for the postmaster. In 1887, the Frisco moved its division point to Plymouth, significantly enlarging the community, and its name was changed to Monett. The portion of Monett that is in Lawrence County was a separate town named Forest Park until 1934, when it merged with Monett. The city of Monett is north of East Purdy, west of Pleasant Ridge, and east of Berwick, while the larger city of Springfield is about forty miles to the northeast.
