The small city of Wheatland, Missouri is in Hickory County. The town was platted in 1869, and named for the retirement home of former President James Buchanan, the fifteenth president, who had died the previous year. The county seat of Hickory County is Hermitage, named for the retirement home of the seventh president, Andrew Jackson. US Highway 54 intersects Missouri Routes B and 83 in Wheatland, and the Little Pomme de Terre River flows just west of town. Hermitage is east of Wheatland, and Quincy is northwest. Other nearby communities include Cross Timbers, Elkton, Galmey, Gerster, and Weableau.
