One of the oldest forms of textile art, embroidery refers to the art of decorating fabric or other materials using thread, yarn, and a needle.

From its earliest beginnings, when basic stitches were used to reinforce and repair garments, to today's intricate, hand-stitched masterpieces and computer-driven machine embroidery, the craft has evolved through changing trade routes, artistic tastes, and changing technologies.

The craft's origins extend at least as far back as the 2nd millennium BC. In Ancient Egypt, stitched motifs of lotus flowers and geometric patterns adorned linen robes and burial shrouds.

Not far to the east, Chinese embroiderers of the Warring States period (5th-3rd century BC) worked exquisitely fine silk threads into elaborate ritual garments.

Similar evidence of early embroidery appears among the Scythians of Central Asia (5th-3rd century BC), and in the Migration Period textiles of Scandinavia (300-700 AD), where running, stem, and whip stitches reinforced garment edges and, at times, served decorative ends.

In medieval Europe, embroidery became a powerful statement of faith and authority. The Byzantine court wove gold and silver threads into liturgical vestments, while the Normans embroidered their victory at Hastings onto the famed Bayeux Tapestry around 1077 AD, a 70-meter narrative stitched in wool on linen.

From the 12th through the 14th centuries, English workshops produced Opus Anglicanum (English work), ecclesiastical textiles rendered in silk and precious metal thread.

By the Tudor era, embroidery had moved beyond church treasures into secular fashion. Blackwork patterns in geometric and floral designs featured trimmed collars and cuffs, while stumpwork (raised embroidery) added a three-dimensional texture to decorative boxes and mirror frames. Across Europe, the Renaissance saw new emphasis on classical motifs, botanical studies, and the rise of printed pattern books, giving wide access to fashionable designs.

The 18th century's growing middle class embraced embroidery as a genteel domestic pastime. Women assembled samplers to demonstrate their proficiency in stitches, ranging from satin and chain to pulled-thread and drawn-thread work, and embellished household linens with pastoral scenes and motifs.

With the invention of hand-powered embroidery machines in the early 19th century, and the rise of the multi-head machine in Switzerland in 1868, embroidery shifted from home parlors to small factories. While machine work enabled faster production of repeat patterns on linens and garments, the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries championed a return to the more expressive possibilities of hand stitching, often referred to as the "art needlework" style.

Traditionally, embroidery falls into three broad categories: surface or free-form embroidery (crewel, traditional Chinese and Japanese styles), in which designs "float" over the fabric weave; counted thread techniques (cross-stitch, blackwork, Hardanger), in which stitches span a precise number of threads in an even-weave ground; and canvas work or needlepoint (bargello, Berlin wool work), in which yarn passes through a stiff mesh to create dense, pictorial surfaces.

Specialized forms of whitework, such as drawn-thread, cutwork, and Broderie Anglaise, remove or manipulate ground threads to produce delicate openwork patterns. Goldwork utilizes metallic threads for dazzling highlights, while regional folk arts, such as Nakshi Kantha (Bangladesh), Mexican Otomi, and Peruvian punch-needle, demonstrate the craft's cultural diversity.

Since the late 2010s, hand embroidery has enjoyed a renaissance pumped by social media platforms. Artisans combine traditional stitches with innovative aesthetics, blending satin, stem, French knots, bullion knots, and couching to create textures and sculptural relief. Many new practitioners have embraced embroidery as a form of mindfulness, upcycling vintage scraps and mending worn garments as a rebuttal to fashion waste.

Countertop embroidery machines bring digitalized designs within reach of hobbyists, using software to convert vector art into stitch sequences. Home machines, often equipped with USB ports and built-in libraries, execute running-stitch outlines, satin-stitch lettering, and fill-stitch motifs with precision. Commercial multi-needle rigs, guided by punch-card or digital files, can outfit uniforms and promotional goods at scale. Recent technologies integrate embroidery software with AI-driven auto-digitizing, enabling complex artwork to be transformed into stitch files in minutes. Other techniques, such as 3D puff embroidery (foam-backed satin stitches) and free-motion "thread painting," have expanded the boundaries between machine and hand work.
