Few cultural phenomena have had the global impact of Harry Potter. What began as a series of novels by J.K. Rowling in the late 1990s quickly expanded into one of the most successful multimedia franchises in history.

While the books laid the foundation, it was the film adaptations that cemented Harry Potter as a worldwide cultural touchstone. Today, the franchise encompasses not only books and films, but also stage plays, theme parks, video games, and a forthcoming television series, all under the umbrella of the Wizarding World brand.

At its core, Harry Potter tells the story of a young orphan, Harry, who discovers on his 11th birthday that he is a wizard. He attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Across seven school years, Harry learns of his destiny to confront Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who murdered his parents and seeks to dominate both the magical and non-magical worlds. The saga blends themes of friendship, courage, prejudice, and sacrifice, culminating in a final battle between good and evil.

Warner Bros. adapted Rowling's seven novels into eight films, released between 2001 and 2011. Collectively, they grossed over $7.7 billion worldwide, making the series one of the highest-grossing in cinema history. Each film corresponds to a year in Harry's life, with the final book split into two parts.

In Philosopher's Stone (2001), Harry enters the wizarding world and faces Voldemort's first attempt at return. In Chamber of Secrets (2002), the mystery of the Chamber and Tom Riddle's diary unfolds. Harry learns about Sirius Black and his parents' past in Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). The Triwizard Tournament ends with Voldemort's rebirth in Goblet of Fire (2005). In Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry organizes resistance against Voldemort and the Ministry. Dumbledore and Harry uncover Voldemort's Horcruxes in Half-Blood Prince (2009). In Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010), the trio hunts Horcruxes while on the run, while Deathly Hallows - Part 2 (2011) brings the Battle of Hogwarts and Voldemort's defeat.

The films were both critical and commercial triumphs. All eight earned strong reviews, with Prisoner of Azkaban and Deathly Hallows - Part 2 often singled out as artistic high points.

While the films brought the wizarding world to life with visuals, they inevitably diverged from the books in scope and detail. Entire subplots were cut for time. For example, the house-elf S.P.E.W. storyline and the character of Peeves the Poltergeist never appeared in the films. Other characters were streamlined. Ginny Weasley, for instance, is portrayed as more assertive and complex in the books than in the movies. The books often dwell more deeply on themes of prejudice, bureaucracy, and moral ambiguity, while the films emphasize action and spectacle. The climactic duel between Harry and Voldemort differs significantly, being more intimate and symbolic in the book and more cinematic in the movie.

However, the films added visual grandeur. The Quidditch matches, magical creatures, and the architecture of Hogwarts gave fans a tangible sense of the world that Rowling had created.

The Fantastic Beasts prequel films (2016-2022) explored earlier wizarding history, focusing on magizoologist Newt Scamander and the rise of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. While initially successful, later entries received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office.

Beyond film, the franchise expanded into stage (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, video games (Hogwarts Legacy), and theme parks.

An HBO television series was announced as a decade-long project faithfully adapting each of Rowling's seven books. With a new cast and a longer format, it promises to explore the novels in greater depth than the films allowed, potentially restoring subplots and character arcs that were previously omitted.

Over 500 million copies of the books have been sold worldwide. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child continues to run in major theaters. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions continue to be global tourist draws. Hogwarts Legacy (2023) brought interactive storytelling to fans.

While this part of our guide focuses on the Harry Potter movies, other aspects of the franchise are also appropriate for this category, and in other categories where they may be on-topic.
