Solar installers perform the physical work of building PV systems. Solar installers learn the trade through multiple training routes that may include on-the-job training, trade schools and certificate programs, apprenticeships, or community college programs. Most installers can begin working within a few months of starting training.

Solar installation engineers generally require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or renewable energy; familiarity with PV system design software and electrical codes; and experience in construction, electrical systems, or energy modeling.

Typically, solar installers should have a high school diploma or the equivalent before starting training. Licensing varies by jurisdiction, although electrical work may require licensure. Certifications as NABCEP PV Associate or PV Installation Professional are preferred for advancement.

Solar installation engineers are typically required to have earned an engineering degree, as well as certifications as NABCEP PV Installation Professional or PV Technical Sales are preferred, along with regulatory knowledge (NEC, local building codes, utility interconnection requirements).
