The oil and gas industry, as a core component of the energy and utilities sector, has evolved from ancient resource use to a modern, globally integrated system that powers electricity generation, heating, industrial processes, and large-scale infrastructure.

Its history spans thousands of years, but its contemporary form emerged in the mid-19th century and has since shaped economies, geopolitics, and environmental policy worldwide.

Long before the modern energy sector existed, civilizations used naturally occurring petroleum and gas seeps for practical and ceremonial purposes. People in Mesopotamia and the ancient Near East used natural asphalt in construction, including the walls and towers of Babylon. Greece had documented pitch springs, and ancient writers described wells producing bitumen and oil. More than 2,000 years ago, China used petroleum and even piped natural gas through bamboo to boil water, an early example of fossil fuels used for energy services. Naturally ignited methane seeps, known as "eternal fires," were noted in antiquity and became part of religious and cultural sites. These early uses were limited by the difficulty of extraction, but they established petroleum as a known and valued resource.

The modern era of the oil and gas industry began with Edwin Drake's 1859 well in Pennsylvania, which marked the first successful commercial drilling operation. This event triggered rapid global expansion in exploration, drilling, refining, and distribution. Key developments included 19th-century refining innovations, such as kerosene production by Abraham Gesner and James Young, which replaced whale oil as a lighting fuel. Early dominance was by the United States and the Russian Empire, which together produced 97% of the world's oil in the 19th century. The rise of internal combustion engines in the early 20th century transformed oil into a strategic energy resource for transportation, industry, and military power. By the mid-20th century, oil and natural gas had become central to electricity generation, heating, and industrial utilities, displacing coal in many regions.

While the broader petroleum industry includes chemicals, plastics, and pharmaceuticals, the energy and utilities sector focuses on its use in electricity generation (gas turbines, combined-cycle plants), heating and industrial steam, backup and peak-load power, pipeline gas distribution to homes and businesses, and fuel supply for utility-scale operations. Oil once played a larger role in power generation, but natural gas has become the dominant fossil fuel for utilities due to its lower emissions and high efficiency in combined-cycle plants.

Oil and gas have powered industrialization, transportation, and global trade for over a century, and the control of oil supplies have shaped global politics, especially during the World Wars and the energy crises of the 1970s. Major producing regions - Texas, the North Sea, the Middle East - built entire economies around the sector.

Environmental impacts have long been attributed to the oil and gas industries. Concerns about smog and emissions led to regulatory action in the 20th century, and oil and gas combustion have been shown to be a major source of greenhouse gases, making the industry central to global warming debates. Drilling, fracking, and pipeline construction can affect ecosystems and groundwater. The rise of renewable energy and climate policy has placed the industry under increasing scrutiny.

The industry includes national oil companies, multinational corporations, and major utility-integrated gas suppliers. Widely recognized leaders in the energy-focused segment of oil and gas include national oil companies (Saudi Aramco, National Iranian Oil Company, QatarEnergy, Petrobras, and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), international oil companies (ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, TotalEnergies), and utility-integrated gas companies, which operate at the intersection of oil, gas, and power generation (Equinor, Enbridge, TC Energy).

The oil and gas sector remains essential to global energy systems, although it is undergoing a transition. Natural gas is increasingly positioned as a "bridge fuel" due to lower carbon intensity. Renewables and electrification are reducing long-term demand growth. Carbon capture, hydrogen, and methane reduction are emerging strategies for decarbonizing fossil fuel operations. Additionally, geopolitical shifts continue to influence supply, pricing, and investment. As the world is pushed toward cleaner energy, the industry faces both challenges and opportunities.
