Rheumatoid arthritis is the systematic inflammatory disorder which principally attacks synovial joints as well as other tissues and organs. The disease frequently leads to the destruction of articular cartilage and fusion, known as ankylosis, of joints and often produces inflammation of the pericardium, the sclera (or whites of the eyes), or the lungs.
