The Barbary Wars were the two wars which went on between the United States and the Barbary States of North Africa over the Barbary pirates and their demand for tribute from American merchant vessels which they waylaid in the Mediterranean. The first Barbary War was led by President Jefferson from 1801 to 1805 in modern-day Libya, Algeria, and Tunisia. The second Barbary War was prosecuted by President Madison in 1815.
