Born Richard Tiffany Gere on August 31, 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Richard Gere’s ancestors include numerous Mayflower pilgrims. He attended college in Amherst, Massachusetts on a gymnastics scholarship, though he majored in philosophy. He was married to supermodel Cindy Crawford before marrying actress and model Carey Lowell. They have one child. Though his father planned to be a methodist preacher, Richard practices Tibetan Buddhism and is a supporter of the Dalai Lama and was wanted in India for “public obscenity” after he kissed a Bollywood actress on the cheek several times. The case was resolved out of court.
