Dr. Josef Allen Hynek was a U.S. astronomer, professor, and ufologist, best remembered for his research into unidentified flying objects. Hynek acted as scientific advisor to the UFO studies done by the United States Air Force under three different names, including Project Sign, Project Grudge, and Project Blue Book. Although he began as a skeptic, his opinions about UFOs changed over time. After his involvement with the Air Force studies, he conducted independent UFO research, developing the Close Encounter classification system, and established the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies. He died in 1986.
