Like other localities in Northern Ireland, Kilkeel is served by the Northern Ireland school system, a framework comprising four key stages from pre-school to further and higher education.

Governance rests with the Department of Education (DE), which oversees curriculum, funding, and policy matters. The Education Authority (EA) ensures schools are available and manages controlled schools, while bodies such as the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS), the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment (CCEA), and sectoral councils support denominational, integrated, and Irish-medium schools.

Designed for children aged 3-4, pre-primary education is an optional nursery programme delivered in pre-school settings or Reception classes in primary schools. In other words, it might be offered in a dedicated pre-school location or within a primary school.

Primary school is mandatory for children aged 4-11. This includes the Foundation Stage (P1-P2), Key Stage 1 (P3-P4), and Key Stage 2 (P5-P7).

Post-primary education in Northern Ireland is for youth aged 11-18. It consists of Key Stage 3 (Years 8-10), Key Stage 4 (Years 11-12, including GCSEs), and Key Stage 5 (Years 13-14, AS-A-levels or vocational equivalents). Pupils may transfer to grammar schools through academic selection.

All grant-aided schools follow the Northern Ireland Curriculum, directed by CCEA. School management types include controlled (state-run), maintained (mainly Catholic), voluntary grammar, grant-maintained integrated, and other maintained (Irish-medium). Independent (fee-paying) schools form a small sector.

Kilkeel hosts several primary schools covering the main management types. These include Kilkeel Primary School (Controlled), which caters to ages 4-11 under EA management. It emphasizes a happy, secure Christian ethos and serves boys and girls in mixed classes. Grange Primary School (Controlled) is a non-denominational school that fosters a caring, hardworking community with a balanced curriculum and a range of extra-curricular activities. Brackenagh West Primary School (Controlled) offers structured learning in a disciplined environment, promoting respect and high expectations for all pupils. St. Colman's Primary School (Catholic Maintained) embraces a strong Catholic ethos, supported by the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools and a governing Board reflecting its trusteeship. Holy Cross Primary School (Other Maintained) is a Church of Ireland foundation providing primary education with a focus on community values. Gaelscoil na mBeann (Irish-Medium) opened in 2010 to meet a growing demand for Irish-language immersion, following DE recognition and funded through Irish-medium sectoral support.

The town's post-primary (secondary) schools include Kilkeel High School and St. Louis Grammar Schools. Kilkeel High School (Controlled) enrols students aged 11-18. Established in 1953 as Kilkeel Intermediate School, it offers a non-selective academic and vocational programme. Core subjects include English, Mathematics, Personal Development, and Religious Studies, with partnership options available alongside St. Louis Grammar and regional colleges, offering broader GCSE and A-level pathways. St. Louis Grammar School (Voluntary/Grammar) also serves students aged 11-18. Founded by the Institute of St. Louis in the 20th century, it is a specialist Technology and Computing college with a strong STEM focus and a thriving Sixth Form.

Kilkeel College of Further Education offers vocational courses, apprenticeships, and adult education programmes, including BTECs and NVQs, addressing local skills needs. The Open College Network Northern Ireland (OCN NI) operates on the campus of Kilkeel High School, offering credit-based qualifications in ICT, vocational skills, and essential skills (including literacy and numeracy) for learners of all ages.

Schools of all levels and types in Kilkeel are appropriate resources for this category, along with any other instructional programmes.
