This part of our guide focuses on Newtownabbey, a large settlement north of Belfast's city centre in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Newtownabbey is separated from the rest of Belfast by Cavehill and Fortwilliam golf course, although it is considered part of the Belfast metropolitan area.

Characterized by scenic landscapes, Carnmoney Hill surrounds Newtownabbey to the North, Cavehill to the south and west, and Belfast Lough to the east, providing waterfront views. Three Mile Water and the Glas-na-Bradan flow through the area.

Newtownabbey was founded as an Urban District in 1958, merging several small villages, including Carnmoney, Glengormley, Jordanstown, Monkstown, Whiteabbey, Whitehouse, and Whitewell. Before becoming its own urban district, it was under the jurisdiction of Belfast Urban District. In 2015, Newtownabbey Borough Council merged with Antrim Borough Council to form the Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Although Newtownabbey is comparatively new as a town or urban district, the area has been settled since ancient times, with evidence of early settlements and agricultural activity.

During The Troubles, a period of conflict in Northern Ireland lasting from the late 1960s to the late 1990s, Newtownabbey experienced several incidents, including gun attacks from paramilitary groups like the Ulster Volunteer Force and the Ulster Freedom Fighters. These and other events have impacted the community, leading to heightened security and a sense of unease among residents that continues, to some extent, today.

Several schools and educational institutions serve Newtownabbey and its extended urban area.

At the higher-education level, Northern Regional College has a campus in Newtownabbey, while the University of Ulster has a campus at Jordanstown.

Area secondary schools include Abbey Community College, Belfast High School, Edmund Rice College, and Glengormley High School.

Area primary schools include Ashgrove Primary School, Carnmoney Primary School, Gaelscoil Éanna, Hollybank Primary School, Jordanstown Schools for the Deaf and Blind, King's Park Primary School, Rathcoole Primary School, St. Bernard's Primary School, St. MacNissi's Primary School, St. Mary's on the Hill Primary School, and Whitehouse Primary School.

There are several association football clubs, hockey teams, and bowling clubs in the area, and local Gaelic games clubs in Newtownabbey include St. Enda's GAC and Greencastle Wolfe Tones GAC, both of which participate in competitions organised by the Antrim County Board.

The M2 motorway passes through Newtownabbey, and the M5 begins at its southeastern edge. Bus services are provided by Translink's Belfast Bus service, Metro, and Ulster bus, while Northern Ireland Railways runs trains serving the Mossley West railway station on the Belfast-Derry line, the Jordanstown railway station, and Whiteabbey railway station on the Belfast-Larne railway line.
